Even the most meticulously maintained vessels can encounter issues, making it necessary to conduct several inspections to prevent breakdowns and ensure the safety of your boat and its equipment for yourself and your family. Regardless of whether a marina managed the winterization process, most of the preparatory tasks for spring do not require professional mechanical expertise. The majority of these checks can be performed without cost, requiring minimal tools. Often, a simple visual inspection is all that’s needed. So, what exactly should you be examining?

Check the 10 steps to prepare for the upcoming boating season and enjoy a carefree time on the water!

1. Check the Engine

Even though it is important to do this after the boating season is over. A quick check at the start of the season is also a good idea because the engine of your boat has stood still for months. Inspect the engine and its components for any signs of wear or damage. Make sure that all liquids are refilled and that you check all cables. Start the engine and check that everything is working properly.

2. Check the Electrical System

Inspect the electrical system, including the wiring, lights, and battery connections. Replace any frayed or damaged wires (even though this is not likely after one winter), clean the battery connections, and make sure all lights are functioning properly.

  • Check if the battery poles have been correctly tightened
  • Check if the batteries have the correct voltage

VETUS TIP: We advise the use of a float charger during winter storage.

3. Check the Safety Equipment

Make sure your boat is equipped with all the necessary safety equipment, including life jackets, a throwable device, a fire extinguisher, flares, a whistle, and a first aid kit. Make sure all equipment is in good condition and easily accessible.

4. Inspect the Fuel Hoses

Checking the gas lines on your boat is an important step in getting your boat ready for the new boating season. Here’s a guide on how to do it:

  • Before you start checking the gas lines, turn off the fuel valve to prevent any fuel from flowing through the hoses (With a modern petrol/diesel engine this is not necessary)
  • Inspect fuel lines for any cracks, leaks, or damage. Look for any signs of wear on the lines. If you find any damage, replace the affected lines immediately
  • Check the fittings and connections for any signs of wear or damage. Make sure all connections are tight and secure. If you find any loose connections, tighten them immediately
  • Clean the fuel tank

5. Check the Navigation Equipment

Make sure your boat is equipped with all the necessary navigation equipment, including a compass, GPS, and depth sounder. Test all equipment to make sure it’s functioning properly and is updated in the beginning of the season.

6. Clean your Boat

Before the season kicks off, make sure your boat is clean and ready for the first trip out. During winter, it’s common for leaves and dirt to get inside your boat. Clean it out early in spring so you don’t miss out on any good weather days on the water.

7. Apply Antifouling

Antifouling is one of the most important parts. A ship that lies in the water must deal with the growth of small organisms, mussels, and algae on the hull of the ship. This may look harmless, but together these organisms form a huge mass. As a result, the growth causes adverse sailing performance. This is why it’s important to protect the part of the boat below the waterline. You do this with antifouling. It is important to research which antifouling is best for your craft.

8. Replacement of Anodes

Anodes and zincs wear out. It’s important to replace your zinc anodes every year to ensure your boat is protected from electrolysis and corrosion. Therefore, they must be replaced before they are worn out for at least more than two-thirds. A small investment in new zincs every year can help save your boat from major damage.

9. Prepare for Emergencies

Make sure you have a plan in case of an emergency. Let someone know where you’re going and when you plan to return. Make sure you have a fully charged cell phone and a VHF radio in case you need to call for help.

10. Pick Your Playgrounds with Care

Boating holidays often lead to increased traffic on the water. Given this, think about where you want to go carefully. New boaters should steer clear of highly popular boating areas, where maneuvering, anchoring, and handling lines in tight spaces can be especially difficult. Opt for a quieter location to gain confidence and experience on the water.
