Check the engine
Even though it is important to do this after the boating season is over. A quick check at the start of the season is also a good idea because the engine of your boat has stood still for months. Inspect the engine and its components for any signs of wear or damage. Make sure that all liquids are refilled and that you check all cables. Start the engine and check that everything is working properly.
Check the electrical system
Inspect the electrical system, including the wiring, lights, and battery connections. Replace any frayed or damaged wires (even though this is not likely after one winter), clean the battery connections, and make sure all lights are functioning properly.
• Check if the battery poles have been correctly tightened. • Check if the batteries have the correct voltage.
VETUS TIP: We advise the use of a float charger during winter storage.
Check the safety equipment
Make sure your boat is equipped with all the necessary safety equipment, including life jackets, a throwable device, a fire extinguisher, flares, a whistle, and a first aid kit. Make sure all equipment is in good condition and easily accessible.
Inspect the fuel lines
Checking the gas lines on your boat is an important step in getting your boat ready for the new boating season. Here’s a guide on how to do it:
• Turn off the fuel valve (With a modern petrol/diesel engine this is not necessary): Before you start checking the gas lines, turn off the fuel valve to prevent any fuel from flowing through the lines. • Inspect the gas lines: Inspect the gas lines for any cracks, leaks, or damage. Look for any signs of wear or corrosion on the lines. If you find any damage, replace the affected lines immediately. • Check the fittings and connections: Check the fittings and connections for any signs of wear or damage. Make sure all connections are tight and secure. If you find any loose connections, tighten them immediately. • Clean the fuel tank.
Check the navigation equipment
Make sure your boat is equipped with all the necessary navigation equipment, including a compass, GPS, and depth sounder. Test all equipment to make sure it’s functioning properly and is updated in the beginning of the season.
Clean and wax the boat
Clean the boat thoroughly, both inside and out. Wax the hull to protect it from the elements and to give it a shiny finish.
Apply antifouling
Antifouling is one of the most important parts. A ship that lies in the water must deal with the growth of small organisms, mussels, and algae on the hull of the ship. This may look harmless, but together these organisms form a huge mass. As a result, the growth causes adverse sailing performance. This is why it’s important to protect the part of the boat below the waterline. You do this with antifouling. It is important to research which antifouling is best for your craft.
Replacement of anodes
Anodes and zincs wear out. It’s important to replace your zinc anodes every year to ensure your boat is protected from electrolysis and corrosion. Therefore, they must be replaced before they are worn out for at least more than two-thirds. A small investment in new zincs every year can help save your boat from major damage.

Prepare for emergencies
Make sure you have a plan in case of an emergency. Let someone know where you’re going and when you plan to return. Make sure you have a fully charged cell phone and a VHF radio in case you need to call for help.
Tips and tricks:
• Make a checklist to ensure you don’t miss any important tasks. • Use a boat cover to protect your boat from the sun and rain when it’s not in use. • Keep a spare set of keys in a safe at an easily accessible location. • Install a bilge pump to help keep your boat dry. • Keep a tool kit on board in case you need to make repairs while on the water. • Check the weather forecast before heading out on the water. • Be aware of any local boating regulations and follow them to avoid fines or penalties.
By following these tips and tricks and completing the checklist, you’ll be well-prepared for the new boating season. Remember to always put safety first and enjoy your time on the water!
