For Henk Steevens and Els Hoekstra, a retired couple from Amsterdam, life on the water has become a meaningful and deeply personal way to spend their time. Their e-weekender (a cabin-style houseboat), moored in Vinkeveen, is more than just a vessel, it’s a floating home that offers them peace, connection to nature, and the freedom to explore at their own pace. Each year, they embark on extended journeys through the waterways of the Netherlands and beyond. But what truly sets their boat apart is how it moves: not with a diesel engine, but with quiet, emission-free power thanks to the VETUS E-POD 10kW electric propulsion system, supported by six rooftop solar panels and a 48V battery system.
This spring, Henk and Els are preparing for their next adventure. A multi-week journey through rivers and canals with end destination southern Belgium. Departing in May, they look forward to a slower kind of travel. Sustainable, silent, and completely self-sufficient.
From diesel to electric: discovering a better way to cruise
For Henk and Els, the decision to embrace electric boating started with a simple test ride. During a VETUS open day, they stepped aboard a boat powered by the VETUS E-POD electric propulsion system, and within minutes, they were convinced.
“The motor was quiet, smooth, and instantly responsive,” says Henk. “We both knew—this was the future of boating, at least for us.”
At the time, they were still cruising in a traditional diesel-powered sloop. While dependable, the noise, exhaust fumes, and vibrations were becoming harder to ignore, especially as they began to value a slower, quieter, and more environmentally friendly way of traveling.
That brief experience with the E-POD gave them a clear vision for their next boat. When it came time to build their e-weekender boat, they didn’t hesitate: electric propulsion wasn’t just an option, it was the obvious next step. With the VETUS E-POD, they’ve found a system that supports their lifestyle on the water: silent, low-maintenance, and aligned with their desire to cruise more sustainably and comfortably.
A self-sufficient setup, built for long-distance cruising
The construction of their houseboat was carried out by Euroship Services in Heerewaarden, a trusted boatbuilder and installer with years of experience in sustainable marine solutions. Euroship handled the full installation of the VETUS E-POD system, along with additional key components such as VETUS bow and stern thrusters, which have proven invaluable for docking and maneuvering in tight spaces. The bow and stern thrusters are BOW PRO models operating on 48 volts, sharing the same battery bank as the E-POD system—making it a fully integrated 48-volt solution. Additionally, the hydraulic steering system is also supplied by VETUS.
In addition to the propulsion system, Henk and Els have equipped their boat with six solar panels on the roof. These feed into a 48V battery bank, creating an onboard energy system that powers not only the E-POD but also their household amenities—lights, appliances, and everything needed for comfortable living aboard. It’s a smart, integrated system that allows them to cruise for days without connecting to shore power.
One of the most creative features of their boat is how they anchor. Rather than relying on a traditional anchor and winch, the couple uses two steel poles, mounted opposite from each other in the corners of the boat. When they want to moor, they lower the poles directly into the ground or riverbed.
“It’s a simple idea, but very effective,” explains Els. “It keeps us steady, even in shallow areas, and we don’t have to worry about dragging chains or noisy equipment.” It’s this kind of practical, independent thinking that makes their boat feel truly tailored to their lifestyle.
The joy of quiet cruising
Since switching to electric, Henk and Els say the biggest change is one you can hear, or rather, not hear. The silence onboard has transformed the way they experience boating.
“We don’t miss the diesel at all,” says Els. “With the E-POD, we can glide through nature and actually hear the birds, the water, the world around us.”
This quiet propulsion also has a calming effect. Without the constant hum of an engine, the pace of travel feels slower, more relaxed. Mooring in remote places, enjoying a morning coffee on deck, or reading in the sun, it all feels more connected, more present. And with the solar setup powering the boat, there’s no need to stop at marinas just to charge. Their energy independence adds flexibility and freedom to their planning, making spontaneous overnight stops or longer pauses in nature easy and worry-free.
Looking ahead: Belgium by water
Their upcoming journey to southern Belgium will take them along a mix of rivers, canals, and tranquil countryside waterways. It’s a route they’ve been looking forward to, combining natural beauty with the charm of small villages and quiet moorings.
“It’s not about speed,” Henk adds. “It’s about travelling comfortably and responsibly at our own pace, with minimal impact on the environment.”
Having already made several longer trips since the E-POD was installed, they feel confident in the boat’s range and performance. The peace of mind that comes with reliable electric propulsion makes it easier to focus on enjoying the experience, not just the destination.
A model for the future of boating
For anyone considering the switch to electric propulsion, Henk and Els’ story offers a clear and encouraging example. With the right equipment, knowledgeable installation partners, and a bit of creativity, electric boating can offer not only environmental benefits but a better overall experience—more peaceful, more self-sufficient, and more aligned with a lifestyle that values nature and simplicity.
Their boat reflects who they are and how they want to travel. And thanks to VETUS and Euroship Services, they’ve been able to bring that vision to life.
