The journey to zero emissions is a long one. Maybe you have already heard about it and would like to transition. “Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil” is a diesel-like fuel that can be produced without fossil resources by processing renewable waste lipids.
HVO serves as a renewable and fossil-free fuel, offering significant sustainability advantages. It boasts an impressive CO2 reduction of up to 90% (well-to-wheel) and reduces emissions of pollutants like particulates, nitrogen, and sulfur. Moreover, HVO diesel has a minimal odor and is highly biodegradable.
VETUS has now given the green light for the D-LINE and M-LINE series engines to operate solely or in mixtures using the low-carbon, renewable paraffinic fuel known as HVO.

What is HVO fuel?

HVO, which stands for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, is a greener and more sustainable fuel alternative. Sustainable features of HVO fuel:

  • Completely fossilfree fuel
  • Reduces CO2 emissions up to 90% compared to regular diesel
  • Very low emissions of particulate matter, nitrogen and soot
  • Contains virtually no sulfur particles and aromatics
  • Is well biodegradable
  • Is virtually odorless

Is HVO compatible with marine diesel engines?

Moving towards reducing the environmental impact of boating, VETUS has now approved the D-LINE and MLINE series of engines to run purely or in blends with the low carbon renewable paraffinic fuel HVO. The approval and certification come after thousands of hours of bench and field tests, to ensure no significant impact of the fuel to the performance, fuel consumption and maintenance schedule of the engines.

Is HVO different from biodiesel?

HVO is sourced from the same raw materials as biodiesel. However, it undergoes a hydrotreating process instead of the transesterification process typical of biodiesel. This difference enhances its oxidation stability, making HVO resistant to bacterial growth, unlike biodiesel.

HVO vs. Diesel?

HVO fuel has similar chemical and physical properties to diesel fuel. However, its fossilfree composition and low carbon content make it an appealing sustainable fuel option, differentiating it from diesel. HVO also has approximately 7% less fuel density, limited aromatic and sulfur content, and a higher cetane value versus diesel fuel. Despite these differences, HVO can be blended with diesel in any proportion.
